UGH! The vacant storefront "ART?"

With the G20 summit fast approaching, Pittsburgh, and downtown in particular are in "redd up" mode. Part of this process is adding images to vacant storefronts.

Let me start by saying I LOVE the concept. I think it's amazing to use this vacant space in such a positive manner. Instead of displaying unique art, innovative scenes, and beautiful pictures of what makes this city so unique, there are blaring neon wordy advertisements calling unnecessary attention to these vacant storefronts. They convey as overbearing advertisements - a very non-urban adaptation of what people "think" urban living is about. Complaining without solution is tiresome, so... blown up versions of the PDP's Downtown Living Exposed campaign would be awesome for this venue. Pics of shows at the Benedum, pics of people enjoying their street vendor hot dog at Mellon Green, or their Primanti's sandwiches on the Square (pre-construction of course) would all be amazing visuals as well

I freelance write from time to time, and one of the many things I've learned is "show, don't tell." These vacant storefront ads are the epitome of "telling" about Pittsburgh instead of showing. Is something better than nothing in this case?

Mark your calendars, D'town residents!

October 3rd, Downtown will play host to it's first ever Downtown Neighborhood Block Party! Scheduled from 6-10, the event will feature food, music, drinks and a whole lot of camaraderie. I'm fortunate enough to be included in the major planning of this event, and it's such a great way for Downtown to solidify itself as the great residential community it is. Soon, residents will be able to get their invitation from their building managers? Not a resident and still wanna go? TOUGH! Just kidding! You can come as an honored guest of a d'town neighbor. See, that's why it's always good to know someone that lives Downtown.

Urban Baby Tours

Check this out! www.urbanbabytours.com

A downtown mom is providing guided stroller tours of Downtown Pittsburgh - so cool! It was just featured on WTAE, Pittsburgh's local ABC station as well as possibly one of the coolest things to do in Downtown Pittsburgh. Tours are only $20 for an hour and a half which doesn't sound bad to me.

I know my way around Downtown like the back of my hand, but when we first moved here it was really confusing thanks to the Cultural District being off-grid from the rest of the city. I attempted to "learn" my way around with my kiddo in tow... let's just say it didn't work very well. Fast forward - once I learned my way around, I found there were so many amazing things to do, see and experience. Now there's a way to have the fun without the learning curve. Parents and kiddos - ENJOY!

Farmers Market at Market Square = My latest obsession

I'm a sucker for routine, and right now I'm obsessed with the Farmers Market at Market Square on Thursdays. I meet a great friend and her two kids, we let them run around at home or at a park, and then we trek with strollers to Market Square to find some of Pittsburgh's tastiest eats.

First stop, Cinco De Mayo for the most amazing salsas. I'm a corn and black bean salad junkie, but I just added a mildly spicy black bean dip to my repertoire. It's literally lunch for two days, and then it's gone. I usually end up buying pie and/or fresh blueberries from Sand Hill, head to Gosia's Pierogies to pick up our weekly Thursday dinner, and the piece de resistance - the Greek couple that sells tastiest Moussaka, Greek lasagna (no idea how to pronounce it), spinach pies and baklava I have ever had! Thank goodness I walk everywhere or I'd be 500 pounds! I know renovations on the Square are starting now, so I'm curious to see how the Farmers Market continues to operate. It runs through December!

We also make sure to stop at Mancini's, where they always give kids a free breadstick. What a fabulous gesture, and good for business too! Thanks to that breadstick I'm now hooked on cinnamon swirl loaves! Thanks kiddo... ugh.

Wow - Where has the time gone?

Time flies when you're having fun, right? I've been busy with all things downtown, so I'll start from the beginning.

I'm currently involved with the planning and execution of Downtown's first Neighborhood Block Party, scheduled for October 3rd from 6 to 10 pm. There will be plenty of food and drink, games, music and fun for the whole family. If you live d'town be sure to get your invite from your building manager... once they're printed and given for distribution. Patience all, they will come! This should be a fabulous event, so mark your calendars!

Between resident council meetings, volunteer meetings, freelance writing, two other business ventures, and let's not forget my KIDDO... the summer has been hectic, productive, and lots of fun. We're enjoying life right now, and the blog took back seat. I'll try to do better, I promise!

And it continues into the evening...

I love the spontaneity our downtown digs provide. After window shopping at Saks and Macy's, and grabbing some groceries at Right By Nature, I thought it would be fun for the fam to go to Tonic for dinner - because I'm in LOVE with the ahi tuna large plate! Although I was a little disappointed the outdoor seating wasn't set up this evening, some neighbors decided to meet there for an evening of d'town fun, so our impromptu dinner out became a great evening of conversation, food, and friends. Afterwards, we parted ways - us to Crazy Mocha, everyone else to Seviche.

Once at Crazy Mocha, the hub and I enjoyed decaf and biscotti, while kiddo decided this was the perfect venue to practice the stand-up routine. I must say, maybe it's my kiddo (but I can't really imagine that to be true), but everyone we meet d'town is so tolerant - and most often amused by the kiddo's show which I'll liken to a coy, show-and-tell style dance recital. After bidding our audience farewell, we walked back by Seviche for sidewalk conversation, pets, friends, and kids and then walked home to tuck the little one into bed. The hub is kind enough to stay in while I go back out and hang with the adults. It's a great night to live the urban life, my friends.

The Perfect Downtown Afternoon...

A friend of mine, and a fellow downtown resident, just shared some great info with me, and I found it important to pass along. This is EXACTLY why I can't imagine living anywhere else in the city.

I had a great lunch in Market Square today (Saturday). At 1:30 I ate at a Mixters’ outdoor table – in the sun and the beautiful urban space. I watched the old guys playing chess on the Stage and tourists taking pictures of each other and fellow locals eating lunch (all the outdoor tables were occupied!). Three young guys stopped and talked with the Dave Matthews Band sax player who was hanging out there. He even let them take pictures of him! One of the Downtown yellow safety guys strolled through and one of the Pittsburgh police stopped to watch the chess players. Two taxi’s waited at the taxi stand and all the parking spots were taken.

There were no screaming idiots hanging-out trying to converse at max volume across the Square. No diesel buses plowing through. Just nice urban sounds. I even heard the great Etta James sing “At Last” coming over the XM music on stage that had me imagining her standing on that stage in a satiny gown and old-style microphone on a warm, sultry evening and me, sitting on my second story apartment window sill, with a cigarette and a fruity martini in my hand…aaah…

The atmosphere at Market Square has really changed and I sat for a while trying to picture how the new construction will change the vibe. I can only imagine that today’s experience will continue to be magnified… I can’t wait!!

Well friend, I totally agree! We'll have to get together for that fruity martini...

Three Rivers Arts Festival - Trains and all

I must say, living downtown during the arts festival feels like you're on vacation. You're literally living at an artsy fair! We've been down there every possible second we can, and it's so much fun. Where else can you see cool art, amazing crafts, great music and eat funnel cake! Mmmm.... funnel cake....

If anyone is in the market for a fabulous toy/showpiece, there's a vendor down there that makes wooden trains out of different types of wood. No stains are used, and they have a lifetime warranty. Actually, he makes all sorts of vehicles - so kids of "all ages" can appreciate them! They are for display or for play. My kiddo's train has had no problems, and when all the little wooden accessories were lost, they were replaced for FREE. We purchased three more cars for the train this year. The vendor is located at Gateway Center. If you're standing on Liberty looking at the fountain, you'd walk to the fountain and turn left at the first opportunity. He's on the right. Good stuff.

Where to play with a kiddo Downtown

So, what do you DO with your kiddo all day living Downtown?

Good question! To answer, here are some of my favorite places to go...

Point State Park. I guess this is an obvious choice, but some may think kind of a stale choice to visit over and over. Don't knock it - creativity goes a long way! I take a bag with a ball, a bubble gun (only because I HATE blowing bubbles), and sidewalk chalk and we could literally stay there for hours. Not to mention running through the shrubs, yelling to hear your echo on the footbridge, and using sticks to draw in the dirt. When the leaves fell in the fall I couldn't pry the kiddo away!

Mellon Green. Not to be confused with Mellon Square, Mellon Green is a square green space with a hedgerow bordering the perimeter except at the corners. Add a fun fountain in the middle, plenty of birds to chase, and a non smoking atmosphere? Fabulous! Added bonus: It's right on Grant Street. You don't have to go out of your way if you're running errands. You can go to the bank, stop to play, grab groceries and keep on going.

Mellon Square. This square has more concrete and more pigeons. I hate pigeons, but my kiddo loves them. As a special treat we'll go there to pigeon chase. The things we do for our kids... sigh!

Katz Plaza. This plaza has fun eyeball benches, a great fountain to run around, its close to Rosebud for quick groceries, and it has really nice trees shaped into a shady hedgerow to escape the sun. Yes, the sun sometimes comes out! Also it's great for a quick outing amidst many errands.

The river trails. A little more obvious, but this is a great place for a long walk with a kiddo strapped in a stroller. Ahhhh! Kiddo doesn't have to be running around all the time, you know.

Market Square. See my previous post regarding Kidsplay. Hopefully with the renovation this will be a great place to let the kiddo run around. Forcing street traffic to the perimeter of the square creates lots of safer space for pedestrians.

Downtown is literally an urban playground. When you live here, the journey becomes your adventure. Enjoy!

Kidsplay in the Square started today

For those of you who may not know, Kidsplay in Market Square started today. Every Friday starting now through July 31st (less July 3rd), events geared towards preschool and young elementary aged kids go on in the Square. Events are held from 10:30 to 11:30am. My kiddo got to touch a firetruck today! Exciting stuff. Plus, it's a great excuse to go out for lunch and a smoothie! Hopefully the PPG fountain will open soon. I guess there is no Spring this year? Cold to hot in a week flat... holy hot weather!

Is anyone else sad that Stay and Play Fridays don't exist this year? I know my kiddo got a big kick out of the breakdancers last year, and the music seemed to bring the square to life! Oh well, at least the Farmers Market on Thursdays is still going strong. It was PACKED this week, and I literally devoured an entire tub of black bean and corn salsa from Cinco De Mayo Salsas the day I bought it. Not to mention I washed it down with fresh cherry pie - yum!

Beautiful day all the way.

What a fabulous Saturday! I started the morning with a great workout at Verve, and then went to meet kiddo and hubby at Point State Park. Kiddo is a huge fan of running in and out of shrubs, playing in dirt, and tearing up dead leaves, so for him this morning was paradise! Next we headed to MixStirs for a bite to eat and something to drink. Talk about accommodating - They made kiddo an American cheese quesadilla out of wrap bread and let us buy a banana. That was super nice of them, and the little area with the couches is the perfect place for the three of us to hang out and chow.

Spring has finally sprung, as evidenced by the yellow pollen all over our noses from smelling dandelions at the park! The trees are filling in at Katz Plaza, forming that super cool shady hedgerow over the perimeter benches of the park. The dogwood flower petals are almost all gone, and EVERYONE is outside! I don't think it gets any better than this. Now, I must get on finding some spring clothes for kiddo. Jeans are turning into capris and tops are turning into belly shirts. Not and attractive look, I must say. Enjoy the beautiful weather everyone!

1902, change the system! Grilled cheese is easy!

I really enjoy going to 1902 Landmark Tavern in Market Square. If you've never been there, it looks like a quaint neighborhood tavern. The inside has that quaint feel, but it's MUCH larger and more accomodating than the outside leads you to believe. Our food has always been tasty, the waitstaff has been friendly, and they have HIGHCHAIRS! Although there isn't a kids menu, they do offer a grilled three cheese sandwich with tomato and french fries.

Now, I to have one of those picky kiddos who will ONLY eat a grilled cheese if it's the yellow American kind, and it must be melted. Doesn't sound too terribly difficult, considering one of the cheeses offered is American.

BIG sigh! I've had the kiddo there 3 times in the last month, and all three times I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with no tomato, and only American cheese, specifiying this is the only kind kiddo likes. Not too difficult - omit two of the three cheeses and the tomato. Another BIG sigh! The first time we order this sandwich it was only American cheese, but it had tomato. The second time it was three cheeses, but no tomato. Today, there were still all three cheeses, except some was shredded this time. The waitstaff has always been super kind and apologetic about the situation which is nice, but I'm still paying for a sandwich kiddo won't touch. Today the sandwich was actually taken back to be corrected, and you could see they just tried to scrape the old cheese off because it was still stuck to the bread. Unfortunately this complicates things beyond the meal in question. When this happens, kiddo thinks ALL grilled cheese is icky, and it takes a few days for him to try it again anywhere other than at home.

Based on our very kind waiter, I'm thinking specific requests are entered on a computer where they're not always caught by the cooks. Once I can understand, but three times in month? I'm getting a little tired of it. Add that to our 1 hour 45 minute stay, and the kiddo was a mess! A hungry, tired mess. I will say it was a super nice Friday at lunchtime, so I can see the wait being a part of life.

With all this said, I still enjoy 1902 and will continue to go... but I implore you - READ THE SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS!!! So to recap - thumbs up for 1902, BIG thumbs up for the waitstaff, thumbs down for the wait, and thumbs down for the lack of ability to omit ingredients on a grilled cheese sandwich.

Poo in the Park

ICK! I took the kiddo to Point State Park yesterday around lunchtime. It was such a beautiful day, and the kiddo was so excited to be outdoors. There was running through grass, under bridges, and through bushes until the disgusting slip - and fall! I cannot say this enough.

PICK UP AFTER YOUR PETS!!!!!!

Nothing is more disgusting than wiping dog poo off your kids' arm. Well, I'm sure there are more disgusting things, but that comes pretty close. We have a small dog. We love dogs! We also pick up our dog's poo if he goes in public. Our neighborhood's cleanliness and safety should be top priorities.

Our fallen officers

While I was out of town, I was devastated to hear about three Pittsburgh city police officers killed in the line of duty over something as senseless as a domestic disturbance. What is wrong with people? The kiddo and I headed out to Grant Street the day of the precession - a very sobering experience. My condolences go to the officers friends and family, as well as the city. What a needless tragedy.

Just waiting....

for the weather to break! I swear, if I get my hopes up during one more 65 degree day I'm gonna scream!! Sorry for the melodrama. I prepared for the cold when I moved here, and accepted, or embraced it if you will, but I'm ready for a few warm park days.

Either way, it was exciting to see people out and about for the Pirates season opener. Not quite as excited by the cigarettes and drunkenness, but sports gives this place a certain energy and camaraderie I find refreshing. All for one and one for all!

Where can you go with a toddler in tow....

to eat? I just wanted to let everyone know about some non-traditional kid friendly places to go eat Downtown. You CAN take your kiddo somewhere other than Max and Erma's. I will say if you're child wants to run around darting in and out of tables screaming at the top of their lungs these wouldn't be the options for you. Our kiddo is tolerable at restaurants. He occasionally throws a crayon off the table, asks to get up, or shrieks once or twice, but he is a toddler folks! They're people, and they're allowed to eat at good restaurants too.

Six Penn Kitchen is one of our favorites for a family night out. It's not terribly quiet, so you don't feel awful if your kid lets out an occasional shriek. Their kids menu has all the kiddo favorites, and I must say their grilled cheese is adult worthy! Unfortunately, if your kid only likes the yellow cheese food you're out of luck - this is the real deal. The kids cups are so sturdy you'll want to take them home! The waitstaff is really good with kids too, and they're very tolerant of spilled water and lots of crumbs. All in all, fabulous.

Although Tonic doesn't have a traditional kids menu, they will make your kiddo grilled cheese or chicken tenders with fries. Granted, the grilled cheese is cheddar on rye, but they'll still do it. They have a very diverse menu, and they also have "small plates" so if your kid likes hummus it works out well. I'm sure you could also get some plain pasta too. It's a little quieter atmosphere, so if you have a screamer be warned. The waitstaff is always great here too, and doesn't make you feel like an ass if your kid is a little loud. Always a plus!

August Henry's and Grille on Seventh is typical American fare, so if your kiddo likes straight up American grilled cheese on white buttery toast this is the place to be. Unfortunately, August Henry's only has one highchair - boo! I recently tried to have lunch there with two friends and their kids but we had to go elsewhere due to the highchair shortage. Grille on Seventh you'll be sitting in their "downstairs" dining room... aka the basement. Once the weather breaks, watch out! Grille on Seventh has outdoor seating on Katz Plaza which is awesome!

Palomino is a little more upscale, great food, and kid friendly! We've only been there once so far, but they had a great kids menu, and crayons. They also brought some sliced grapes and crackers for the kiddo as an appetizer, without being asked, free of charge. Sold!

Sonoma Grille is good for kids too. Unfortunately my kiddo broke out in hives after eating there so we'll be steering clear for awhile. I have other friends with kids who go there often and LOVE it! Definitely a good option.

So, if you're living downtown with your kiddo, or are just trying to figure out where to eat Downtown with your kiddo, consider some of these options. You'll be glad you did.

What's up with the weather?

Not much more to say other than that. Spring, come NOW!!!!!!

va va Verve!

While I enjoy all the amazing food within blocks of the loft, my waistline is ultimately paying the price. I used to avidly work out, but with some postpartum back issues I scaled back to practically nothing. With the weather breaking, I plan on getting out and walking more with the kiddo. I also decided to join Verve Wellness - A W E S O M E! I've been taking yoga and pilates for a few weeks now. Not as often as I'd like, but getting back into it nonetheless. Lynsey and Joanna know their stuff! Just figured I'd share. I'm confident pilates is going to whip me back into shape... if I lay off the pierogies and french fry laden salads. Mmm...

St. Patricks Day - Pittsburgh Style!

The concept of being able to walk out your door, walk two blocks, and be part of a major event never gets old. There were droves of people decked out in green St. Paddy's Day garb, lining Grant and Boulevard of the Allies just waiting to catch a glimpse of the action. I managed to stand on a traffic light base with the kiddo strapped to my back and got an adequate view. In my opinion (although, isn't' this ALL my opinion?) it was a little chilly for stationary standing. We made it about 45 minutes before we decided to head home. No worries though, a stop at Crazy Mocha completed our quick trip. I had to run some errands anyway, and briefly met a friend and her kiddo on the tail end of the parade. By then the crowd was a little more diffuse and the stationary chill in the air was gone. Note to self - next year, go later and stand at Boulevard of the Allies! Either way, the freedom of being able to experience this event around where you live is so incredibly convenient... as always!

Spring is in the air... hopefully!

The anticipation of Spring is almost electrifying! I feel I'm pretty tolerant to the cold and gray, but the amazingly beautiful weather this past weekend just made me crave more! For the first time in MONTHS I was truly able to experience a typical day of my former spring life as a Pittsburgher. The simple pleasure of sending husband and kiddo off to the park while I indulged in a much needed pilates class was enough to make my day. Meeting them at the park afterwards, heading over to MixStirs in Market Square for a late breakfast and then to Crazy Mocha for coffee and biscotti was sheer bliss! Our experience at MixStirs on this morning was phenomenal - peaceful atmosphere, yummy food, and family friendly! As always, Crazy Mocha was upbeat and fun. It always puts me in a great mood.

It's days like these that I cannot imagine living anywhere else in the city. It's comfortable, it's walkable, it's friendly, and it's a true community. There's so many fabulous things on the horizon here, and I cannot wait to be a part of it all!

If you want a good time...

go to Seviche and Tonic!!! Seviche has to be one of the most fun, hip, unique places downtown right now. Great service, delicious drinks and food... an all around fabulous time. Josh and Jess couldn't be any nicer! If you're going out and can only pick one place, pick here - SO fun!

Of course, the beauty of living downtown is you don't have to stick with one place, you can walk to so many amazing places. Tonic Bar and Grill is also one of my 'faves. They have such a diverse menu - From hummus, to pad thai, to burgers. Everything I've ever tried there has been scrumptious!

Most important, the customer service at these establishments is phenomenal. I like going places that value their repeat customers. Both Seviche and Tonic fit the bill!

This neighborhood needs a playground

Point State Park is one of Downtown's greatest assets! A big green open space to run around, read a good book, play sports, have a picnic - the possibilities are endless. It's also a great draw for visiting families. My friends often ask me "Where do you take your kid to play?" When I mention PSP, they ask if there's a playground. Most major city parks have some sort of play structure for kids, and even most minor ones. Where is ours? There's certainly enough space for one. A playground with a fence around it would be a HUGE draw for families! A safe, enclosed place for kids to play would be a big boost for families thinking of Downtown as a viable living option. If you build it, they will come! My kid is a little small to really care about this sort of thing yet, but in a year this could become problematic.

Nice In-Town "Getwaway"

If you've never had the opportunity to vacation in your own backyard I highly recommend it. It really is a different experience - especially if you have a kid! There are often 4 star hotels listed through Hotwire.com for less than $100 per night - an excellent deal. We have, or have had family stay at many hotels downtown - The Courtyard Marriott, the Hilton, the Westin, the Omni William Penn, and the Hampton Inn (technically the Strip, but REALLY close) and all have been pretty darn nice. We have family staying at the Renaissance in a few weeks so I'm sure that will live up to the reputation.

The only downside to the backyard vacation? I really wish more places were open on the weekends. With many new condo and apartment complexes expected to open this year, hopefully more downtown businesses will open their doors outside of bankers hours.

Ahhhhh-mazing!

If you EVER need a chiropractor in downtown Pittsburgh, I cannot recommend HealthQuest Chiropractic and Dr. Greg Simunick enough - FABULOUS! While I love my kiddo, he has ruined my back. Between chasing him throughout Point State Park, in and out of car seats, picking him up off busy sidewalks and more, I had constant lower back pain. I have been twice and already feel so much better! Just as important - I can take my son with me! Dr. Simunick has been super accommodating and tolerant of the kiddo. Just another great business making downtown a super family friendly neighborhood.
